The Age Book of the Year Awards Announced
Melbourne Writers Festival opened last week with a keynote address from renowned writer, actor and director Simon Callow and the announcement of the winners for The Age Book of the Year Awards.
James Boyce's 1835: The Founding Of Melbourne And The Conquest Of Australia has been named The Age Book of the Year, as well as collecting the award for non-fiction.
The poetry prize was awarded to Mal McKimmie for his second collection The Brokenness Sonnets I-III And Other Poems.
The fiction prize went to Gillian Mears for Foal's Bread, her novel about horse jumping in New South Wales before World War II, for which she has already won the Prime Minister's literary prize for fiction.
