Geelong Regional Library Corporation is pleased to announce that Cr Andy Richards of the City of Greater Geelong was re-elected as Chair and Cr Margot Smith of Surf Coast Shire was elected Deputy Chair at its first Board meeting for 2013.
Cr Richards said he looked forward to carrying on his work.
“The library service continues to grow. In the last 12 months we have opened another magnificent new library, this time at Bannockburn, and completed a major refurbishment at Torquay Library. Work on the landmark Geelong Library and Heritage Centre is on track to begin later this year and planning is underway for a new library at Leopold.
We know every dollar invested in the Geelong region’s library services returns $7.46 in economic benefits to our community.
We will continue to build on the successes of recent years to ensure that over 270,000 people in the communities serviced by our Library Corporation continue to receive the latest in library services and innovations”, Cr Richards said.
Cr Smith is serving her first term as both a Board Member and a Councillor and said she understood the importance of the service to the Geelong region.
“Libraries enable everyone in the community to access a wealth of resources and to enjoy reading. They provide valuable support in improving literacy across all age groups”, Cr Smith said.
With the rapid advancements we have seen in technology, libraries are now playing a valuable role in closing the digital divide in our communities through free wifi access, online collections, free public access computers and technology classes”, she said.
Geelong Regional Library Corporation Board Members are: Cr Tony Ansett, Cr Kylie Fisher, Cr Rod Macdonald, and Cr Andy Richards representing City of Greater Geelong; Cr Helene Butler representing Borough of Queenscliffe; Cr Nathan Hansford representing Golden Plains Shire; and Cr Margot Smith representing Surf Coast Shire.
